President-elect Barack Obama could reignite an emotional national debate over the promise and the perils of medical research using cells taken from human embryos. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is warning that Obama will alienate millions, and abortion opponents are bracing for a fight. Medical researchers, meanwhile, are rejoicing at the prospect of freedom from a government policy they say has stymied efforts to develop life-saving treatments. More here.

Researchers have identified a group of chemical compounds that slow the degeneration of neurons, a condition behind diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The researchers tested 45 chemical compounds. Four were found to be the most potent protectors of neurons, the cells that are core components of the human brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Leading medical experts are warning patients against using untested remedies advertised on the internet which, they say, sell "false hope". The group, backed by charity Sense About Science, says vulnerable people are being increasingly exploited by the online promotion of such treatments. More here.
